Its time I told the truth!!

I have to be honest with everyone, especially the British.

Having tried "Fish N' Chips" several times now, from all kinds of recommended locations. I have come to the conclusion that I am not CRAZY about them.

I love seafood, and I do enjoy fish n' chips. But to me they are like ginger snap cookies, I'll eat them and like them, but only if they are the only cookies left on the plate. I would prefer to eat almost any other type of cookie. (They are on the bottom of my "like" list)

My question is ....Why deep fry your fish, when you could have it as sushi or grill it or BBQ it or do almost anything else other than soaking it in FAT. I don't mind Fish n chips, but it would be near the bottom of the list on how I like my fish prepared. Maybe my palate isn't as discerning as others, but all fish n chips taste the same to me.....But according to the Brits there are different tastes from different parts of the country????? I am confident that deep fried fish will alway taste like deep fried fish, no matter who has made it.

And why, in a country surrounded by the ocean does nobody eat SUSHI!!

Why does "land-locked" Calgary have lots of SUSHI restaurants and not Leeds????

WHY WHY WHY....

Forgive this rant, It comes from a sushi deprived maniac. (SUSHI.........Where are you??)

I'm not sure about sushi, but I'll have to agree on the "fish and chips" statement.

I've eaten fish and chips in Auz, NZ, and an outlet mall in Calgary and they alway taste the same. I think it carries more cultural flavour than culinary.

Fish n chips is surely as English (or indeed British) as croquet and castles. That said, no one i know plays croquet or lives in a castle. In much the same way, most brits of middle class or above don't seem to eat that much fish n chips. The true national dish by amount consumed is chicken curry.
I think the good people of england are awakening to the fact that fish n chips is a little bland in a modern foodscape of world cuisine, and possible not the most health concious option.

As to the lack of Sushi, i guess its about the cultural imports. There is a vibrant south east asian culture here, lots of thai, korean, japanese and chinese immigrants bringing the breadth of their culure with them, including the cuisine. I suppose thats a proximity thing; the west coast of america is just a lot closer than the uk. Our immigration has been heavily influenced by the empire. Hence we have lots of indian/pakistani/bengali and jamaican culuture and cuisine (to name but a few). I guess the lack of sushi is the price you're paying this year for a wonderful choice of curry houses. In return, while I am missing the pubs and tikka masalas of albion, i am flinging myself with gay abandon into sushi (not literally; ew- what a picture!). I promise to think kindly of you every piece of sashimi i enjoy.

Regards.
